Dans la forêt lointaine

This catchy childhood song is about the cuckoo bird who is answering to the owl with his "coucou" sound. ???? Click on the cuckoo clock to get the lyrics and sing along on our YouTube channel.

Did you know? - "Coucou" is not only for the birds! When you are giving a shout-out or saying hello or popping in to say hello, we call it "faire un petit coucou". When you play "peek-a-boo" with a child in French you say "coucou".

Although we do have cuckoos in Canada, they do not make the "coucou" sound like the European cuckoo does, and which we see in cuckoo clocks. You can listen to the North American cuckoos here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Yellow-billed_Cuckoo/sounds https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-billed_Cuckoo/sounds

Translation of the song:

In the faraway forest, we can hear the cuckoo bird.

From the top of his tall oak tree

He is answering the owl. Cuckoo (or "Hello" or "Peek-a-boo"), Owl!

1, 2, 3 mon cheval de bois

What a fun traditional song to learn the parts of a horse! ???? Of course, the song is about "un cheval de bois" (a rocking horse), but the vocabulary can be used for the rest of your life - especially if you love "l'équitation":  longue crinière (long mane), queue par derrière (tail in the back), quatre noirs sabots (4 black hooves), une selle au dos (a saddle on the back).

It is a favourite among young children!

Have fun singing along to the video and making believe you are on "un cheval de bois"!

You can find the rebus lyrics by clicking on the image.  Find the video on our youtube channel (see Free Videos below).

Translation:

1, 2, 3 my rocking horse!

Long mane, tail in the back,

4 black hooves, a saddle on the back.

1, 2, 3 my rocking horse!

J'entends le moulin

This traditional French song is a favourite of children. Everyone loves trying to sing it faster, and faster, and faster - just like the blades of a windmill. The lyrics are mostly made up of the sound of the windmill turning: tique, taque.

Have fun singing along to the video or having singing contests with your family to see who can do it the fastest!

Translation:

I hear the windmill (tique, tique, taque)!

Cartes d'Halloween

The ghost card says "éBOOstouflant" instead of "époustouflant" (breathtaking); the mummy says "mummies for life" instead of 'friends for life" (it almost rhymes in French); Frankenstein "in person" sends his wishes; and "ce n'est pas sorcier" ("it's not difficult/it's not rocket science") to be friends with you.
